This was the seventh Copa Libertadores final appearance for the Asunción based Olimpia, but only the first final appearance for Atletico Mineiro.
A sell-out crowd of over 30,000 welcomed debutant Atlético Mineiro to Estadio Manuel Ferreira with loud cheers, fireworks and one of the best mosaics ever seen at a football game.
The Paraguayan side won the game 2-0 at home against Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores final.
Alejandro Silva (23min) and Wilson Pittoni (90+4min) were the goal scorers for the winning side. Silva’s opener was a left footed shot that went off the near post. Wilson Pittoni scored the second goal with a free kick late into second-half injury time.
Aside from the mosaic, the match also created controversy as reported earlier, Mineiro star and former Brazilian International Ronaldinho was the target of rock throwing courtesy of Olimpia supporters.
During a corner, Ronaldinho picked up the rocks in dismay to show them to be of dangerous size. Rocks of that magnitude could have caused significant damage had they hit the mark. However, as no one was hurt there will most likely be no repercussions for the Paraguayan side.
