Lukas Podolski: Arsenal can win the Premier League

Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski is confident that the current crop of players at the club are ready to challenge for the Premier League title - and the German international is adamant that they can win the championship this season.

The Gunners have not won any silverware of any kind, apart from the Emirates Cup, since 2005, when they beat Manchester United on penalties to win the FA Cup - and last season they fell short yet again.

Arsene Wenger's men put in poor performances in the league and all trophy competitions and even got knocked out of both domestic cups by lower league opposition, but the final couple of months of last season has given the players at the Emirates a lot of hope for the season ahead.

Arsenal won nine out of the last 11 Premier League games and despite accepting that the Premier League is a tough competition, Podolski believes the club can finally end their drought and win the title.

"It will not be easy," he told the Daily Mirror. "Everyone thinks it's easy to get a trophy.

"You have five or six teams who fight for first place. It's not like in Spain where it's just two teams and in Germany you just have Dortmund and Bayern.

"It's not easy in England. It's so competitive.

"At Arsenal we have good players, a great coach and great fans. If we can pull it together then I believe we can win the Premier League."

Podolski enjoyed his debut season in England and ended the season as the club's third top-goalscorer behind Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud, but the German wants improvement for his second year in the country.

"I will try to play better, score more goals and do some assists for Arsenal," he added. "It's very important that we qualify for the Champions League and fight for the championship.

"It was my first year and I'm very happy. We will see how much I can improve and whether I can get better."
