Every day we read some new rumour saying that Manchester United is interested in some player but thats just about where it ends interest or the occasional bid which is shortly rejected.

It has been rumoured that David Moyes, who took over at the Red Devils this month has been given a limitless budget, but he doesn't seem to be making use of this supposedly large sum of money.

The Scot was on the verge of signing Thiago Alcantara but it was later confirmed that he opted to join Bayern Munich, reuniting with former boss Pep Guardiola since no move to Manchester had been agreed.

Also rumours have been circulating regarding the Old Trafford club's interest in long time target Kevin Strootman but despite this interest and United's need for a holding midfielder, the Dutch star joined AS Roma as a move to England failed to materialise.

Leighton Baines, a player who Moyes himself managed in his time at Everton has been linked to the club for a while now but is still wearing the blue of the Merseyside club.

Even through all United's defensive problems which were proven last season and the season before by Nemanja Vidic's injuries and Rio Ferdinand's ageing, the new manager has so far failed to bring in a centre back and a left back to replace Patrice Evra, who also isn't getting any younger.

Ezequiel Garay, the Benfica defender has been linked with a move to the club has so far not been confirmed.

Cristiano Ronaldo was linked with a move back to Old Trafford but it seems highly unlikely as Carlo Ancelotti insisted that the player wanted to remain at the Bernabeu.

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas and Marouane Fellaini of Everton have also been rumoured to be on their way to the English Champions.

At this stage of the transfer window when United's rivals Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been strengthening their squads more so than United who have only been able to complete one signing of 20-year-old full-back Guillermo Varela.

If United do not complete some transfers soon the upcoming season may prove to be a great challenge for their squad.

With some time still left in the transfer window one can only hope that United will improve their squad in order to compete with other clubs the Barclays Premier League and the UEFA Champions League in the upcoming season.
