As David Moyes' first season as Manchester United manager draws closer, it becomes more difficult for the Manchester United fans to realise that there will be no Paul Scholes in their squad.

The legendary player has been truly inspirational throughout his entire career, and there is no doubt that he will be missed next season.

The departure of the 38-year-old has forced Moyes to go searching for replacements, but how does one fill the shoes of somebody as incredible as Scholes?

Here are three solid candidates who have the potential to take Scholes' place. In no particular order:

Cesc Fabregas

There has been a fair amount of speculation about a possible return to the Premier League for Spanish star, Cesc Fabregas.

Although Barcelona spent two years working hard to sign the former Arsenal captain, he has not managed to secure a place in their first-team, and with Barcelona's new signing of Neymar, it will become even more difficult for him to earn consistent playing time which is what a player of his magnificent ability deserves.

Manchester United, under the management of new manager, Moyes would definitely welcome Fabregas to the squad with open arms. Former Arsenal striker, Robin Van Persie has had phenomenal success with the English champions, and I'm sure that would help convince his former team-mate to leave Camp Nou and return to England.

Ilkay Gündogan

Ilkay Gündogan is amongst several of the world's best young midfielders who proved how sensational they are in this previous campaign. The 22-year-old German star was key for Borussia Dortmund this season, particularly in the Champions League.

As well as earning praise from the Dortmund fans because of his sensational performances in the semi-finals against Real Madrid, he also managed to convert a penalty calmly past Manuel Neuer to draw Dortmund level in the final. Although Bayern Munich were victorious in the end, there were signs of Gündogan's elegance and wonderful skill.

Gündogan is notorious for his stamina, dribbling ability and range of passes. The one thing Paul Scholes was often complimented for most was his incredible passing ability. If Manchester United are looking to bring in a midfielder with the potential to become as good as Paul Scholes in that department, then Gündogan is a solid candidate.

Wesley Sneijder:

The Dutchman has been wonderful for years. As well as having the capability to play defensively, he is also a terrifying force for any team's attack. As well as being excellent for turkish club, Galatasaray, he has always put on solid performances for the Netherlands.

One representation of Sneijder's pure class seen all around the world is his 'banana pass' that curled around the opponents defence directly to Manchester United striker, Robin van Persie.

The one potential difficulty for Manchester United if they do decide to pursue Sneijder is that he signed the deal to join Galatasaray very recently. On 20 January 2013, Sneijder signed a three-and-a-half-year deal for the turkish club. If United want to sign him, they will have to make an excellent offer.
