Garcia-Matthysse mega-fight on Mayweather undercard

From the moment it was announced, the super showdown between pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and perhaps the greatest threat to his undefeated title, Saul Alvarez, was always going to cause a stir.

Fans of the sport will now have even more to get excited about as Danny Garcia-Lucas Matthysse has been added to the undercard.

The accompanying bout, which would most certainly be regarded as a main event on any other night of the year, has generated quite a buzz around the boxing world as the undefeated Garcia, who Brits may remember for his devastating knockout of Amir Khan, pits himself against the notoriously explosive Matthysse.

On the one hand you have Garcia, the man who has yet to taste defeat. The American is the current holder of the WBC, WBA (Super) and Ring Magazine light-welterweight belts and has known pedigree, with such names as Zab Judah and Erik Morales on his resume of victims. Since his KO of Amir Khan in July 2012, Garcia has defended his titles twice and is widely considered to be one of the best upcoming fighters in the world.

The other side of the coin presents Argentinian Lucas Matthysse. Well credited for his punching power and raw aggression, Matthysse is well up there with the best pound-for-pound punchers in the sport. Coming off the back of a third-round TKO victory over Lamont Peterson, Matthysse is vying for Garcia’s belts and poses a very intriguing challenge.

Though the fight might not quite incur comparable levels of curiosity to Mayweather vs. Alvarez, it does make for one hell of an undercard event.

Garcia’s father and trainer, Angel, was quick off the mark in laying down the gauntlet for his son’s opponent.

According to, the elder Garcia stated: "People are making it seem like he's King Kong, but he ain't no King Kong. Matthysse is just an average guy who has fought a bunch of nobodies.
"Listen, he's going to be the easiest fight for Danny. They're trying to make him out to be a killer, but he ain't no killer. Danny's the killer, and Danny's the champion of the world."

With the event having already captured the imagination of the world due to the ingredients of it’s main event, Garcia vs. Matthysse serves to give boxing fans the ultimate starter.
