New Chelsea signing Andre Schurrle has admitted that he is looking forward to the future, after his £18m transfer from Bayer Leverkusen took over a year to complete.

The Germany international had been on the Chelsea radar for over a year, with a deal in January falling through, before Jose Mourinho eventually signed Schurrle this summer for a fee of around £18m.

Leverkusen repeatedly dismissed the deal was going to happen, before Schurrle eventually made the move last month. And the new signing has also revealed that former Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack was a key figure that convinced him to make the move to Stamford Bridge after talking to him about his time there.

Talking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur, where Chelsea are currently based for their pre-season training, Schurrle has revealed that he always hoped the move would happen, despite taking over a year to materialise.

"I always hoped the move would happen," he told reporters. "It took a long time. I wanted to come last year to Chelsea and it didn't work. It wasn't my decision. It was the decision of Bayer Leverkusen.

"They didn't want me to go and I had to make the best of the situation. At the beginning it was really hard. I wanted this so much and it didn't work out. It felt like a missed opportunity but I wanted to be professional in all ways."

And Schurrle added that although his move took so long to be finalised, he never stopped giving his all for former team Bayer Leverkusen.

He added: "I said to myself I had to do my best in every match for Bayer Leverkusen and every training session and improve and it would come at another time and so it was."
