Gossip plays a big part in the world of football today.

Where would we be without the transfer rumours that fill up the empty space in the summer vacated by the actual games themselves?

Now, as the transfer window approaches the crucial month of August, let's take a look at the five of the worst transfer rumours so far this summer.

5. David Luiz To Napoli

With Rafarl Benitez's exit at the end of the last season to Napoli from Chelsea, the Express reported that Luiz could follow him too, but his agent Giuliano Bertolucc moved quickly to deny any of the reports linking the player to Italian club.

4. Iker Casillas to Arsenal

There are some players that should not be mentioned in the transfer talks, but the Mirror took the plunge after the Spain No. 1 failed to start a game for a long time under Jose Mourinho and reported that Arsenal were in for the player.

It was also reported that if Mourinho stayed for one more season the player was likely to leave. Although the news of Casillas not being happy under Mourinho were to be true, the idea of Arsene Wenger going for a 31-year-old at the price of £30m was unrealistic.

3. Wayne Rooney to Barcelona

The England and Manchester United forward seems to be linked with the exit door every summer and yet still he remains at Old Trafford.

Spanish tabloid Sport.es claimed that the Catalan giants were willing to offer two players - Thiago Alcantara and David Villa - plus £3m cash to sweeten the deal.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo to Chelsea

The Daily Mail at it again, and this time the Manchester United fan favourite was linked with a move to Chelsea, who were apparently in pole position to land the £80m Portuguese international.

The rumour got running with the news of Mourinho moving back to Chelsea and wanting to link up with the player again. The most astonishing part of the rumour was that Mourinho wanted Wayne Rooney, Edison Cavani and Ronaldo at Stamford Bridge.

1. Lionel Messi to Manchester United

If there were any awards for the worst transfer rumour ever, this one would surely win it. A Northern Ireland based newspaper, Sunday Life, published the news of the Red Devils pushing for the Barcelona superstar.

The rumour originated with Johan Cruyff's statement to sell the Argentinian upon the arrival of Neymar. The news since then has been severely criticised by several tabloids.

What do you think about these rumours?
