Alex Rodriguez’s New York Yankees return delayed

.

New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez has suffered an injury setback and will not be taken off the disabled list.

According to ESPN, Rodriguez has suffered a Grade 1 strain of the left quadriceps and no timetable has been given for his return.

A-Rod had been hoping for a Yankees return on Monday after recovering from a hip injury that has seen him miss the entire season.

“I am extremely disappointed with the results of the MRI and hoping to be back as soon as possible and continue with my goal of coming back and helping the Yankees win a championship," he said in a statement.

Rodriguez turned out for Yankees Triple-A affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday as designated hitter, but complained of stiffness in his thigh and did not return to the line-up for Sunday.

The Yankees sent him back to New York for an MRI scan, which highlighted the injury and meant that he would return to the disabled list just as his 20-day rehabilitation period was ending.

Rodriguez last week revealed he was expecting to return to action for the Yankees on Monday in the first of their four-game set against his former side the Texas Rangers.

"I will be back on Monday and I'm very excited," he told WFAN Radio on Wednesday.

"If I have a good weekend, I'll be there in Texas."

The third baseman will now return to Florida and the Yankees training complex in Tampa to rest and recuperate.

However, a Grade 1 strain is the mildest form and, while no date has been given, Rodriguez should not be waiting for a significant period before making his long-awaited return.
