Numerous blue moons have passed us by since Manchester United last purchased a high-profile midfielder.
Sir Alex Ferguson left a promising team; perfect with blend of experience and youthful energy in all departments but one. You guessed it: midfield.
So now it’s up to David Moyes to get Manchester United that perfect midfielder. Thiago Alcantara and Kevin Strootman are both out of picture already, having joined other clubs. Now, the Red Devils are reportedly interested in Cesc Fabregas and Luka Modric.
Is one player more likely than the other to come to United? Yes. Is one more suited to the United squad than the other? We really can’t tell.
Here, we talk about both these players, and recent developments about their signings.
Cesc Fabregas | Barcelona, Spain
Cesc Fabregas is a talented player, there’s no doubt about that. The fact that Barcelona thought him good enough to keep him at the cost of Thiago Alcantara’s departure says a lot about his value for the club.
However, Manchester United have already made two bids for him, which were both rejected by Barcelona.
Fabregas has both Premier League and Champions League experience, and has performed well for both Arsenal and now Barcelona.
At 25, he is the younger of the two, and is just as talented as Modric - if not more.
He played in centre midfield at Arsenal, dictating play and creating chances, but at Barcelona, he is employed in a little advanced role. That fact that he has done well in both clubs is proof enough for his versatility.
If United capture Fabregas, they can finally go on to play the fluid football that allowed them to win Champions League few years ago.
Luka Modric | Real Madrid, Croatia
Modric’s Tottenham days are past, but not forgotten. While at White Hart Lane, Modric was arguably one of the best players in the league. When Spurs had to let him go, they accepted a lower bid from Real Madrid to keep him away from Premier League rivals Chelsea who had bid higher.
Modric’s first season at the Bernebau has been far from stellar. Sure, his goal against the 10-men United got them knocked out of the Champions League and in the later part of the season he notched some good performances, but with the midfielders coming in, and Ancelotti’s relation with Kaka could mean that he could see his game time reduced. At United he would certainly be the certified best midfielder (apart from Michael Carrick).
He also has both Premier League and Champions League experience, and has proven that he can perform well at big games. He could be an appropriate signing for United, if the Fabregas transfer falls through.
Of the two players, Fabregas would be a better option for United on paper. Moyes certainly seems to think so. But, we never know. Maybe Barca will refuse to sell Fabregas, and Modric could be the heir to the legendary Paul Scholes. Only time will tell.
