Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that both Isco and Thiago Alcantara were targets for the German club to replace Mario Gotze.

The 46-year old coach told Kicker that the Champions League finalists were after both the U21 European champions Isco and Thiago before they signed for Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, respectively.

The German giants were in the search for an attacking midfielder this summer after the sale of Mario Gotze to Bayern Munich for a fee of €37m.

Dortmund's scouting network is renowned for their ability to unearth jewels and Klopp admits that the Spaniards were a part of his pre-season plans.

"We also thought about signing Isco," Klopp told Kicker. "We are not stupid. We had a look at Thiago Alcantara as well. We saw all of them."

"It was pretty clear that we would not stand a chance in the race for Isco's signature, though."

However, after missing out on both of them, the Bundesliga side snapped up Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk and the coach is delighted with his latest signing saying the 24-year-old is the perfect match for the club.

"Mkhitaryan fits us like an arse in a bucket," the Dortmund coach told Bild. "What he offers is exactly what we need."

The German coach also discussed potential replacements for Robert Lewandowski, who is expected to follow Gotze to Bayern Munich next summer, indicating the club might make a move for Porto star Jackson Martinez in the summer of 2014.

"I have a number of attackers in my mind, but I don't know whether we can realistically sign any of them," Klopp continued. "Jackson has a lot of qualities that make him an interesting striker. He holds up the ball very well, scores a lot of goals and is always available to receive the ball."

The 26-year-old Colombian striker, who signed with Porto last year for $11m is on a contract with the Portuguese side until 2016.
