Manchester United look set to miss out on yet another midfielder after being told by Lazio president Claudio Lotito that his in-demand midfielder Antonio Candreva, was not for sale, according to Sky Sports.
Candreva put in 32 league appearances for his club last season, as well as impressing recently in the Brazil-hosted Confederations Cup. He also helped his team to a Coppa Italia victory over arch-rivals Roma.
The English champions have been frustrated in their attempts to find a midfield partner for Michael Carrick so far this summer, after their top target Thiago Alcantara opted instead for a move to German and European champions Bayern Munich.
They have also been rebuffed in their efforts to sign Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas (formerly of United's Premier League rivals Arsenal) after their latest bid for the player, believed to be in the region of £25 million, was rejected by his current club - and they appear likely to suffer the same fate with their pursuit of Candreva, who is also wanted by Napoli.
President Lotito, when asked about the highly-rated midfielder clarified: "He [Candreva]'s not for sale. Napoli? They have never called me, but if they do, I'd say he's not for sale"
Lotito also moved to quell rumours of Candreva's future or the club's financial strength by saying: "Lazio are the only club who have bought players without selling. We wanted to strengthen the team...we have achieved all the market targets we had."
