Aston Villa continued their questionable pre-season with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Luton Town, the Daily Mirror reports.
The Premier League side, who had drawn all four friendlies prior to last night's game, fell victim to a surprise win from the Hatters at Kenilworth Road.
The main talking point of the night, however, was undoubtedly the return of the much talked about Christian Benteke, who got his first piece of action in a Villa shirt since the conclusion of the summer transfer saga that saw him hand in a transfer request.
The Belgian forward, who recently made a U-turn on his plans to leave Villa Park and signed a new, lengthy deal, was not expected to feature in last night's outing, but found himself included in the starting line-up by manager Paul Lambert.
Despite finding the net 19 times in the Premier League last season, the young powerhouse cut a dejected figure upfront for Villa during their loss, and was unable to make any real impact.
Villa boss Lambert contributed Benteke's performance to a simple lack of fitness, stating: "It's just another fitness thing. The major thing is Christian is back. Some of his touches were brilliant. He's done a little bit of training he still has to get match fit but that first 45 minutes under his belt will have done him good."
Travelling fans of Villa, of which there were a reported 675 last night, may have been anticipating a routine victory for their side against a team who ply their trade in a division four leagues below their own, but they were to be left disappointed.
Luton scored goals in the 23rd-minute through a Jon Shaw tap-in and then sealed the win late-on as substitute Jake Howell's deft chip over the on-coming Brad Guzan found it's way into the net.
The scoreline is of little relevance to Aston Villa's plans but it will interesting to see if Benteke can replicate last season's form as he regains fitness.
