Manchester United playmaker Shinji Kagawa would be welcomed back at Borussia Dortmund, according to chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Kagawa has been at Old Trafford for one season after he signed in a £17m deal in the summer transfer window last year.

Opportunities in the starting XI were few and far between for the Japanese star, who was not always guaranteed a starting spot in the league winning team.

Speculation has grown in recent weeks about how Kagawa is feeling unsettled in Manchester after a frustrating first season at the club. In a season riddled with injuries and lack of first team-action, a return to Germany and Borussia Dortmund is looking increasingly likely.

Kagawa was recently quoted on a local Japanese TV station as saying he was disappointed with his first season in England, and would welcome a return to Dortmund if the opportunity arose in the future.

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke admits he would welcome Shinji Kagawa back to the club in the future with open arms.

Watzke told Bild: "Shinji (Kagawa) is a player we would welcome back,"

"The door is always for him at our club."

However, any chances of a return to the Champions League runners-up looks unlikely, after Manchester United boss David Moyes revealed he is excited to work with the 24-year-old midfielder.

"I know a little about him as a player," Moyes said. "Sir Alex spoke in glowing terms about Shinji and how good a player he is.

"I've just met him today, so we're getting to know each other. I'm trying to learn Japanese and he's trying to understand my Scottish.

Moyes expressed his belief in Kagawa by admitting Kagawa will only improve as a player, and learn from his mistakes after his first season in the Premier League.

Moyes added: "It was his first season in the Premier League last year. He's a young player so we hope his development continues. I look forward to working with him and hopefully he has a really good season coming up."
