Yahoo! Sports reports Houston Rockets' star Chandler Parsons believes he had a big hand in convincing Dwight Howard to join his side above any other.

Parsons, who attended and played basketball for the University of Florida, said: "I think I had a big impact.

"Obviously, he loves the team, Daryl Morey, coach McHale and all that. But I think I just gave him that comfort that you got one of your boys here who is also a key part to the team, a young guy.

"And we can grow on this for a long time."

Parsons and Howard grew to be close friends following Parsons' switch to Howard's agent Dan Fegan in May. It's believed to have been this connection that aided Houston Rockets during the free-agency recruitment.

When asked about the details of his involvement with Howard's move, Parsons explained: "We kind of just hit it off. We literally would text every day.

"He'd call me at 8 p.m. with a question and then he'd call me at midnight with the same question. I respect the way he handled [his free agency].

"He took his time and weighed all his options.

"I told him how good I thought we could be," Parsons added. "If you add him with me, James and Jeremy [Lin], Omer Asik … [and] what better coach to play for than a top-50 NBA player of all time in McHale?

"With "Dream" [Hakeem Olajuwon], Yao [Ming] and Ralph [Sampson] and all these centers that had success in Houston, I think it was a no-brainer for him."

Parsons is believed to have installed in Howard the belief that the Houston Rockets would be good without him, but nothing short of great with him.

"I was comfortable enough and I could tell the way he was talking to me and how he was excited about things in Houston that I was sure he was going to come."

Howard is said to be relieved to have finally put his one-season tenure at Los Angeles Lakers - a period he described as "a nightmare" - behind him.

The 6ft 11in center spurned LA Lakers' offer of a five-year $118 million deal to take up the Rockets on their four-year $88 million proposal.

Howard did admit that the decision to make the move was made a lot easier due to the interaction from Parsons.

“Chandler is probably the guy you should really thank.

“He's been blowing my phone up every day. He's been great.”
