Like him or hate him, Luis Suarez is a phenomenal player.

Were it not for the controversy surrounding the Liverpool striker, he would undoubtedly be touted as the best striker, and arguably the best player in the Premier League after last season’s performances.

Just like Arsenal with Robin van Persie two seasons ago, Liverpool were a one man team last season, and that man was Suarez. Now I realise it is a grave injustice to any team to brand it a one man team.

No player can achieve anything without the efforts of the other 10 players on the pitch, but it is hard to imagine, or remember for that matter, any of the positive things about Liverpool’s season that didn’t involve the Uruguayan international.

Up until Suarez’ beef with Ivanovic, which had the former mistaking the latter for meat, Suarez was the Premier League’s top goalscorer, and with just a few games to go, very few would have argued against the Premier League Golden Boot being  secured by the Liverpool man.

He terrorised defenders to devastating effect, showing an insatiable thirst for goals, wins, and glory on a weekly basis. So deadly was the striker, that not only did he have the most completed dribbles in the league, but he also had the most key passes, thus proving that beyond his imperious scoring abilities was a reserve of shrewd genius and creativity.

I could argue that barring the lengthy ban, Suarez would have truly cemented his place as the best striker in the Premier League, but we can not duel on what could have or should have been.

As deadly as Suarez was for Liverpool, he wasn’t the best goalscorer in the Premier League last season.  Robin van Persie, Romelu Lukaku, Christian Benteke, and Dimitar Berbatov; among several other Premier League strikers all had better conversion rates.

As prolific a scorer as Suarez may have been, he was also relatively wasteful in front of goal. When considering the whole package though, Suarez was definitely the best striker in the Premier League last season.

While there were other strikers who could match and/or better his goal scoring exploits, there was simply no striker in the league with Suarez’ impressive combination of vision, skill, versatility, inventiveness, movement, and goal scoring prowess.
