Leeds United defender Leigh Bromby has been forced to retire through injury.

The news comes on the back of surgeons advice after the injury which he sustained against Cardiff in April 2012, failed to subside.

"I've been advised by the surgeon Andrew Williams to retire from the game," Bromby told the Leeds United official website.

"It's become clear over the last 14 months that I wouldn't be able to continue in a capacity and it's with a heavy hear that I've decided to formally retire as a play.

"I've had a wonderful career, and played for some wonderful clubs, and I wanted to finish at a club I've always supported."

After winning promotion to the Championship with Leeds in 2010, the former Sheffield United and Wednesday man made a total of 388 appearances in his career with 66 of those coming at his current club.

"The aim when I came to Leeds was to win promotion back to the Premier League and I hope that can still be achieved while I'm at the club," he said.

Although stepping down with a heavy heart, Bromby revealed he was happy with his new role within the club as the 33-year-old has agreed to take up a full-time coaching role with Leeds United under-16's.

"People say as one door closes another opens and I'd like to thank Leeds United for giving me the opportunity to take my first steps in coaching with the Under-16's."
