Ashley Cole has been Chelsea's undisputed first-choice left-back for years, but now that title is under threat.
Ryan Bertrand has come through the Chelsea academy and is beginning to establish himself as a first-team player.
Making nearly 40 appearances for the Blues last time around, Bertrand is now looking to build on that and make the left-back spot his own.
There were some distinct signs of decline in Cole's play last season, his defensive positioning is still top notch but he finds himself being out-run by pacy wingers all too often nowadays.
Bertrand is fresh, young and offers considerably more offensively for Chelsea with his overlapping runs and sufficient crossing ability.
The west London side have been linked with a move for wing-back Fabio Coentrao and Southampton youngster Luke shaw this window which suggests they could be in the market for an Ashley Cole replacement.
Personally, I believe Bertrand is more than suitable to be the heir to Cole's left-sided throne and, given the opportunity, he will emulate the successes of his predecessor.
