Arsenal need more than a striker

Arsenal fans are, rightly, very excited at their seemingly ever increasing chances of signing a top quality striker in the guise of Luis Suarez from Liverpool.

It was notable last season that Arsene Wenger was unable to replace the departed Robin van Persie or his wonderful goal-tally. A new striker, therefore, was always going to be a top priority in this transfer window.

However, with all the talk focusing around Gonzalo Higuain then, when that fell through, Suarez, it has been easy to forget the other areas of the team which need some care and attention.

Arsenal fans have been crying out for a proper defensive midfielder since Gilberto Silva left the club in 2008. Alex Song filled the gap, but even he was as keen to get on the front foot as many of his team-mates.

Whilst Mikel Arteta and, in the later part of last season, Aaron Ramsey have both done a job for Arsenal in that role, neither player is ever likely to be the powerful, dominant player that Arsenal fans crave.

The fans have been used to seeing players of the size and calibre of Patrick Vieira and Gilberto playing so effectively in this role that they demand a like-for-like replacement.

Defence is another area that needs reinforcements. The pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny proved fruitful in the second half of the season but the worrying decline in form of captain Thomas Vermaelen in the centre and Bacary Sagna on the right are both cause for concern.

In goal, Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski are both more than proficient keepers but both have question marks. This is hardly surprising given their ages, so do Arsenal need to bring in a more experienced keeper, at least temporarily?

All in all, Arsenal have a good team. With the massive war chest announced at the beginning of the summer, the fans expect and demand that the whole team is much improved by quality signings come the start of the current season. The only question is: will Wenger spend spend spend?
