Last season saw the Manchester United defence plagued with injuries, something that was expected to prompt the English champions to strengthen their back line this summer.
Central defence could be an area David Moyes will look to improve, but so far their only signing has been 20 year old full-back Guillermo Varela.
Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Nemanja Vidic were often injured during the last two seasons, and at times the only available defenders were the ageing Rio Ferdinand and the vastly improved Jonny Evans.
At times even central midfielder Michael Carrick was forced to play the centre back role due to the lack of fit centre backs.
Still, it seems the Red Devils have placed more emphasis on securing a central midfielder rather than a centre back, despite reported interest in Benfica's Ezequiel Garay, Inter Milan's Andrea Ranocchia and Davide Astori of Cagliari.
Yet the Old Trafford club have not be able to secure the signature of any of these reported targets, and continue in their pursuit of former Arsenal captain and Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, despite reportedly having two bids rejected.
Teammate Gerard Pique, a former United player himself, says United are wasting their time.
While United do need a holding midfielder, they more urgently need a centre back which they should attempt to sign before the end of this transfer window.
