Chicago Cubs’ Alfonso Soriano is set to return to former club New York Yankees after the two clubs agreed a deal.

Soriano was due to appear for the Cubs on Thursday as they took on the Arizona Diamondbacks, but manager Dale Sveum was asked to withdraw the 37-year-old from his starting line-up as the deal was “99 percent” complete.

After the MLB reviewed the finances behind the deal, ESPN reported this morning that the deal was done following Soriano decision to wave his no trade clause.

Chicago are said to be paying $17.7 million of the remaining $24.5 million left on Soriano’s contract, while the Yankees will pay the rest.

Soriano began his career in major league baseball in 1999, joining the Yankees from Japan.

After four years in New York, he later became the Cubs’ most lucrative signing in November 2006, in a deal worth $136 million over eight years.
