Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has hailed Wilfried Zaha as a "fantastic talent" following a series of impressive performances on the club's pre-season tour.

Zaha, who signed for the Red Devils in January before spending the rest of last season on loan at former club Crystal Palace, scored his first Manchester United goal in Friday's 2-2 draw against Cerezo Osaka.

And Ferdinand firmly believes United have another talented starlet in their ranks.

"Wilfried is a fantastic talent. That is why you pay £15m for a kid," Ferdinand told Sky Sports. "He is raw, with great individual skills and the early indications are that he is a hard worker.

"He wants to be a top footballer and he wants to improve. With those attributes, that desire and the influences he will have at this club, hopefully we will have a top player on our hands.

"Wilfried can take people on from a standing start.

"He is quick and direct but what has surprised me more is that he gets his shots off.

"I have not watched him loads but obviously he is a winger who has a hunger to get inside and drive into the opponents' box. That is a good thing to have."

Ferdinand is also convinced that Zaha's injury-time equaliser is evidence that United will retain their never-say-die attitude under Sir Alex Ferguson's successor, David Moyes.

The new Red Devils boss went close to suffering a third pre-season defeat, only for Zaha to spare the Premier League champions' blushes at the death with a close-range tap-in.

"We never know when we are beaten," Ferdinand added. "That Wilfried came on and scored a late goal like that shows what the Manchester United spirit is like. It is still there and it is still roaring strong."

Meanwhile, Zaha has reiterated his desire to play first-team football for Manchester United this season rather than spend the campaign out on loan.

"My own target for my first season in Manchester is to be able to get minutes," the 20-year-old told the Daily Mail. "I don’t want to go out on loan or anything. I just want to play when I get the chance."
