Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic gave Manuel Pellegrini cause for concern when he was stretchered off during a 1-0 Barclays Asia Trophy final win over Sunderland.

The 20-year-old looked in excruciating pain as he was carried off in the final minutes of the encounter, though the extent of his injury is still not clear with boss Pellegrini opting to wait until City return to Manchester before the defenders condition is assessed.

The pitch that staged the final had been on the receiving end of plenty of criticism from clubs and managers following some extreme weather conditions in the Far East, but Pellegrini was reluctant to point the finger of blame and instead was full of praise for the  fans of Hong Kong, who turned up in their numbers despite the torrential rain.

"I think the injury was part of the game, rather than the pitch. Playing on this pitch was not easy, but we always tried to play, not with high balls, but passing the ball," said the Chilean.

City are light at the back following the departure of Kolo Toure to Liverpool, and despite being heavily linked with a move for Real Madrid defender Pepe, they haven't actually brought in a replacement yet. At present, the only cover City have for Nastasic is Joleon Lescott, who fell out of favour under previous boss Roberto Mancini.

Nastasic will have a scan on his ankle when City return to Manchester on Sunday, which will reveal the extent of the Serbian's injury.
