Morelia forward Jefferson Montero hit one of the finest hat-trick’s in living memory – but still couldn’t stop his side losing 4-3 against rivals Toluca in their Liga MX showdown last night.

The 23-year-old Ecuadorian got the ball rolling in the very first minute with a brilliantly inventive curling finish from the tightest of angles.

His team-mates should have known something special on the cards when he followed that up with perhaps the pick of the lot – an audaciously nonchalant from the edge of the area.

Montero then put the icing on the cake with a final brilliant goal, firing home past the reach of the Toluca goalkeeper after 76 minutes.

Sadly for the young attacker his efforts were in vain as Toluca scored two very late goals to claim a 4-3 win.

Despite the result the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly Montero’s hat-trick. Dennis Bergkamp bagged an excellent trio of goals against Leicester in ’97; Rivaldo’s against Valencia in 2001 wasn’t bad either, but is Montero’s the greatest one ever?
