This question is probably the most talked about and most disputed question in world football - who is better out of Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi?

Ronaldo signed for his boyhood club Real Madrid for a world record fee in the region of £80million.

Ronaldo earned this price-tag after winning the Ballon d'Or with Manchester United in 2008.

At this time, Ronaldo was undoubtedly the best footballer in the world and had won Premier League titles and the Champions League in England.

However, his dream of becoming one of 'Los Galacticos' and wearing the white of Real Madrid meant that he joined the Spanish giants in 2009.

Ronaldo has been excellent for Real Madrid and entertains week-in-week-out. In 135 La Liga games, he has scored 146 goals and has 48 assists.

Ronaldo is Real Madrid’s talisman and a vital part of their team. The 28-year-old Portuguese captain has been attracting interest from the Premier League but many would be surprised if Ronaldo left Madrid.

Messi, on the other hand, came through Barcelona's academy and has established himself as one of the best players in the world - if not the best.

Messi's record in La Liga, like Ronaldo's, is exceptional. He has 215 goals in 246 La Liga games.

His goals-per-game ratio may not be as good as Ronaldo's, but Messi is definitely not as selfish.

The Argentine has 97 assists in La Liga and is expected to continue his sparkling career this season with Brazilian forward Neymar by his side.

Ronaldo has also won everything there is to win in England with Manchester United and Spain, but is still waiting to win the Champions League with Madrid. He has Golden Boots, like Messi, and stars in tournaments.

Messi has won everything with Barcelona, plus four Ballon d'Or awards in the past four years.

But despite his individual awards, he truly is a team player. He has La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey winners medals as well as numerous Golden Boots.

Ronaldo has always produced in the Champions League. In 92 Champions League he has scored 50 goals and he doesn't look to be finished yet.

Messi has a remarkable 59 goals in 79 Champions League games, which is outstanding for a 26-year-old.

On the international stage, Portugal captain Ronaldo made his debut in 2003 and has scored 39 goals since then.

He has appeared at a World Cup and European Championships and earned 104 caps.

Messi's international record is somewhat similar. He has 35 goals in 82 games.
