Southampton will have to smash their transfer record if they want to sign Brazilian international striker Leandro Damiao, according to sambafoot.com.
Internacional have told the Saints that they will have to offer at least £22 million to sign the striker they have been tracking for much of the summer.
Damiao has admitted he would relish the opportunity of playing in the Premier League and Saints, who are keen to bolster their attacking options, appear to have made the player their number one transfer target.
However, it is believed that Tottenham are also showing an interest in the Brazilian international.
Internacional director Marcelo Medeiros has warned both clubs that Damiao will not come cheap.
Medeiros said: “The price is £22 million. If one of the clubs wants to buy Damiao, this is the price they will have to pay.”
The Saints have already signed Dejan Lovren and Victor Wanyama this summer for a combined fee in the region of £21 million.
But that – combined with the £22 million asking fee for Damiao – is unlikely to put them off from making an offer for the Brazilian as Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino appears to want him to lead the line in the upcoming season.
Saints’ current record outlay for a player is the £13 million they paid last year for Uruguayan international Gaston Ramirez.
