Manchester United manager David Moyes continues to look for midfield recruits, as he recently stated that Manchester United are short in the midfield area.
The media linked United to Barcelona's Thiago Alcantara and PSV Eindhoven's Kevin Strootman, but they have now joined Bayern Munich and AS Roma respectively.
Now Moyes is looking to sign Alcantara's former team-mate Cesc Fabregas, and according to reports has already had two bids for the player rejected.
Barcelona are unlikely to sell Fabregas until they can find a midfielder for themselves, having already lost one in this transfer window. Hence, the Fabregas transfer saga is likely to stretch throughout August.
While it is understandable that Fabregas is Moyes' no.1 target, he'll still have to act quickly if he needs any other recruits.
Marouane Fellaini - who played under Moyes at Everton - has a £22million release clause attached to his contract which expires in August. Of course, Moyes would be well aware of this, having managed the player for many years.
If United wait till they have confirmation on Fabregas to bid for Fellaini, it's possible that they might miss out on both, because if the release clause expires, Everton are unlikely to let go of their star midfielder for anything less than £30million.
United's defence has been shaky in the pre-season tour, with Tom Cleverley and Anderson faltering in their new found roles as defensive midfielders.
Fellaini, meanwhile, was one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League last season. While providing great cover for the defence, he could also act as a playmaker and standing at 6ft 4in tall, was always a threat in the box. He is also accustomed to the Premier League's physical style of play, and indeed has the build to excel in it.
While Fabregas would surely be a great signing, Moyes cannot afford to put all his eggs in one basket. Fellaini would be a great addition to the squad, irrespective of whether the club signs Fabregas or not, and for that Moyes will have to act quickly.
Do you think Manchester United should bid for Fellaini before it's too late? Have your say below.
