Lewis Hamilton is firmly back in the hunt for the driver's championship in 2013 after his victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Briton, who had written off all hopes of winning on Sunday, was as shocked as anybody as the new tyres suited his Mercedes and he was able to pull off a fairly straightforward win.

"I'm baffled," Hamilton said post race.

"Honestly, we really didn't expect this. We bolted the tyres on and they worked for us."

Many, including Lewis, were expecting Mercedes to wilter under the extreme heat at the Hungaroring on Sunday, but instead boosted hopes for the rest of the season.

Now 48 points off leader Sebastian Vettel, Hamilton and his team are convinced they can challenge for the title.

"Vettel is the absolute favourite," Mercedes Chairman Niki Lauda told German broadcaster RTL, "without question. But I can tell you that Spa and then Monza will suit us."

Indeed the development race could play a very interesting part in the final half of the season as many teams switch focus to the new regulations coming in 2014, however Mercedes already has a team working on 2014 so can continue development on this year's car.

Looking ahead to the next two races, Lauda said results at Spa and Monza "will decide our priorities for the rest of the season."

Christian Horner was also impressed by Hamilton in Hungary and admitted the '08 champion was "very much" still in the championship picture.

Hamilton agreed: "You never know what the tyres are going to do elsewhere, but if we came here and made our tyres last then we should be able to do it anywhere.

"I hope this is not the last time the tyres work for me."

Lewis also spoke about how emotional this win was given his current off track issues with long time girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger and actually devoted his win in Budpest to the singer.

"It's been the toughest couple of months of my life," he told British television Sky with his voice trembling.

Lauda joked to Bild newspaper: "As long as he drives as he did in Hungary, long may his heartache live!"
