United & Madrid in Chiellini fight

Published 3 Comments

Manchester United face competition from Real Madrid in the race to sign Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, according to reports.

TalkSPORT claims the Spanish giants have decided to ‘test the water’ in a bid to bring the player to the Santiago Bernabeu, and are considering a £17million offer for the Juventus star.

The radio station claims the Red Devils have a long-standing interest in the 28-year-old, and could bring him to Old Trafford as a potential replacement for Rio Ferdinand.

Juventus, who won Serie ‘A’ last season, class Chiellini as one of their three ‘unsellable’ players however, and won’t want to lose the 63-cap international.

New Manchester United manager David Moyes is yet to make a big-name signing since taking the reigns from Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, missing out on Thiago Alcantara and struggling to secure the signing of Cesc Fabregas.

Chiellini would add experience to the Premier League champions’ backline, and also compete with Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans for a place in the side if he does replace Ferdinand at the club.
