Pep Guardiola the dream appointment for USA

Published 3 Comments

The notion that Pep Guardiola would manage the US men's national team seems ridiculous. Still, how wonderful if it were to be true!
Well, Spanish sports newspaper Marca featured an article by Santiago Segurola, a sports journalist known to be close with Pep Guardiola, that mentions this future fantasy image in a serious light. The article discusses Pep’s life in Munich, touches on his decision to leave Barcelona, and also brings up his stay in New York CIty.

Guardiola studied German in New York to better communicate with his new team. During this time, he and Segurola kept in touch and Pep opened up about how much he had grown to enjoy life in New York during his year-long sabbatical stay; even his 12-year-old-daughter, María, was very sad to leave.

Perhaps, his new fondness for the Big Apple was enough for him to consider coaching the USA National Team someday.

The former Barcelona coach has just begun his pre-season campaign with Bayern Munich and will be looking to add to his vast trophy collection in the years to come - and he’s only 42!

But will Guardiola be after the World Cup one day? The USMNT is going in the right direction, and it wouldn’t be surprising at all if they reached the top 15 ranked teams in the world before the end of the decade. By that time, if Pep were to take the reigns, it could become just the solution American soccer fans have been praying for and could very well lead to the Yanks’ first World Cup title.

Aside from one or two people on Twitter, nobody has really given this idea much thought, since it seems to be as probable, at the moment, as a Ukrainian team lifting the Champions League trophy at the end of this season.

The concept is titillating, nonetheless, especially since the report comes from a non-American outlet, unlike many of the other rumours surrounding big-name coaches wanting to take charge at the USA helm. Stories involviong José Mourinho and Marcello Lippi never really had a leg to stand on.

Hopefully, nothing changes Pep’s mind in the years to come and this fantasy can play out to be quite the reality.
