Jose Manuel Reina doesn’t look like he will play for Liverpool again after completing his move to Napoli on a season-long loan.
Liverpool, having just signed goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from Sunderland, were expecting Reina to compete with the Belgian for the number one spot. However, Brendan Rodgers recently revealed that Reina had to go due to his constant flirting with Barcelona.
The Spaniard's desire to move to Barca has never been a secret, often celebrating with their flag or jersey. He immediately showed his interest in a move to replace Victor Valdes as soon as the Spaniard expressed his desire to move away from the Camp Nou.
Brendan Rodgers thus signed Mignolet to compete with Reina and eventually decided on moving Reina to Naples where he could re-unite with his ex-Liverpool boss, Rafa Benitez. He would be hoping that Benitez can get Reina to the form he was in back in 2005-06.
Although Brendan Rodgers would be more than happy to see Reina perform at Napoli, I personally feel that this is the end for the Spaniard at Liverpool. He is soon going to turn 31 and although he can easily have another five or six years in his prime, I feel that it would be hard for him to compete with Mignolet next season.
Mignolet seems to be doing better every passing season and I personally feel that he is really going to thrive under Rodgers. Personally, I feel that this is it for Pepe Reina and Liverpool. Do not be shocked if he signs on for Napoli on a permanent deal - or if he moves to the La Liga next season.
