Manchester United are planning to offer Real Madrid £25m for midfielder Luka Modric, according to The Times.

With the Red Devils looking increasingly unlikely to secure the services of Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who is reportedly determined to prove himself at the Nou Camp, the Premier League champions have switched their focus to the former Spurs midfielder.

Modric moved to the Bernabeu last summer for a fee of £33m but endured a difficult opening few months with the La Liga giants.

Indeed, the 27-year-old was voted as one of the worst signings of last season - along with Barcelona's Alex Song - before the turn of the new year.

However, Modric enjoyed a much-improved second half to the campaign, and won over the Real Madrid faithful after scoring the all-important equalising goal in the Champions League last 16 second leg against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

And it's at Old Trafford where Modric could now be playing his first-team football from next season, if United get their way.

With less than three weeks to go before the 2013/14 Premier League campaign gets underway, United boss David Moyes is becoming increasingly desperate to strengthen his new squad.

And with Real Madrid bolstering their midfield with the high-profile acquisitions of Isco and Asier Illarramendi this summer, Moyes may now regard Modric as attainable.
