NBA star Daniel Gibson was arrested on Monday, and will be questioned by police after he was involved in a fight at a nightclub in New Orleans.

The free agent, who was released by the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer, is said to have broken another man's jaw after throwing a punch during a night out on July 8 according to New Orleans Police spokeswoman Remi Braden.

The 27-year-old, who now faces a second-degree battery charge, said he was protecting his family while out celebrating with his wife Keyshia Cole, after she sang at Essence Festival two days earlier.

Court records found online show Gibson was released on a $20,000 bond, with the basketball player revealing he turned himself as he had nothing to hide.

"It was toward the end of the night," Gibson said

"We encountered a couple of people and I don't know what their motives or intentions were but they came off the wrong way. This guy got real aggressive toward my wife and myself and I did what I felt was necessary to handle the situation," he added.

Gibson said the man said "something" to his wife but wouldn't go into details.

"He was very disrespectful toward my wife."

Although he could not be identified, Braden said the victim is from St Rose, 25 miles outside the city.

Gibson is now due to appear in court however no date has been set.

Gibson enjoyed a seven-year spell with the Cleveland Cavaliers, however remained sidelined for much of last season with injury.

Despite being in contact with a few teams over a new deal, he still remains a free agent.
