As a Manchester United fan, I have sat back and watched the drama that has been our transfer activity so far.
First it was Thiago, a saga that started to resemble the Sneijder and Batistuta ones from yesteryear.
Originally, it was a sure thing that he was going to sign for us and that we had agreed a deal for the former Barcelona starlet.
Then, all of a sudden, his former boss at the Catalan club registered his interest and he was packing his bags and heading to southern Germany in a deal worth around £22 million.
Since then we have been linked with Cesc Fabregas and after having two bids already rejected, David Moyes is contemplating whether a third bid is going to change anything.
It seems as though the Fabregas deal is dead in the water; something I'm not overly disappointed at if I'm honest.
Now, there are rumours we are turning our attention south of Barcelona, to the nation's capital, Madrid. Real’s former Spurs midfielder Luka Modric is next in the rumour mill but my question to United fans is - why do we need a player like Modric or Fabregas?
In my opinion, we already have plenty of players who can do the job of either of these potential signings.
Their qualities lie in the ability to open up a defence and in Kagawa and Rooney (I’m sure he’ll stay) we have that already.
Add in Carrick, Cleverley and the emerging Nick Powell, and we already have a ball player and someone who can open up defences. What we need is some muscle and tenacity in the middle.
Anderson has threatened to be that player at times but his fitness levels and reliability are too often questioned to risk him in the big games.
Whilst it is good that Moyes has identified that a midfielder needs to be brought in, I still don’t think he has the right idea about the specific type of midfielder.
Kevin Strootman’s name has been banded around quite a lot in the transfer window but it looks as though Roma have made their move and he will sign for them.
We need someone to compliment Carrick’s flair and execution in the middle, someone that will go and win the ball in the defensive third. The kind of role that Makelele played so well for Real Madrid and Chelsea. Current players such as Michael Essien would also fall into that category.
When you look around Europe, there doesn't seem to be too many of these players left. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Javi Martinez at Bayern Munich are two; Daniele de Rossi at Roma is another.
Maybe the plan is to play Phil Jones in that role next season but, for me, we are targeting the wrong type of player. Forget your marque signings, we’re used to not having one so find a player that will fit into the team and make us better.
