Gibson hands himself into police after nightclub fight

Free agent Daniel Gibson has handed himself into police and faces a second-degree battery charge after a fight resulted in a man being left with a broken jaw.

Gibson, 27, who was a 2006 second round draft pick out of the University of Texas, is accused of landing the painful blow on July 8 in a New Orleans nightclub.

"It was towards the end of the night," explained Gibson. "We encountered a couple of people and I don't know what their motives and intentions were but they came off the wrong way.

"This guy got real aggressive toward my wife and myself and I did what I felt was necessary to handle the situation.

"He was very disrespectful towards my wife."

Gibson has spent his entire NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but left the franchise this summer after enduring a difficult final season.

While he has traditionally been a reliable bench scorer for the Cavs, a variety of ailments limited his playing time during the 2012/13 campaign and he logged just 5.4 points per game.

Despite his on-court struggles, Gibson has reportedly held talks with a number of teams so far this summer.

It remains to be seen, however, how this indiscretion will affect his chances of securing a new deal in time for the new season.
