Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he has failed in his attempt to bring Shinji Kagawa back to Signal Iduna Park.

Kagawa, 24, who left Dortmund for Manchester United last summer after spending two years at the German club.

The Japanese midfielder endured a frustrating first season at United and found it hard to cement a regular place in the line-up due to injuries.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move back to 2013 Champions League runners-up.

Klopp, 46, admitted he has spoken to the playmaker but has said he wants to stay with the Premier League champions.

“It was clear relatively quickly Shinji wants to prevail this year at Manchester United. I did not expect a different answer,” Klopp told Sky Deutschland.

Kagawa has recently revealed that he would be open to a return to the Bundesliga at some stage in the future.

“One day I will return to Dortmund, if they agree to it,” Kagawa told Japanese television.

But the player’s agent Thomas Kroth, has said that ‘a return to Borussia is not imminent'.
