NBA Champions the Miami Heat are the most talked about team on ESPN show SportsCenter, according to a new Deadspin report.

The LeBron James-led team were covered on the show for 962.75 minutes in 2012 - the most in the NBA and the most across all major US sports.

The New York Yankees ranked second - but number one in the MLB - as they were discussed during 410.25 minutes of Sportscenter action.

The hugely popular ESPN round-up show is a staple of the sporting landscape Stateside, and anchors the TV station's reputation as the go-to place for sports news.

Other popular teams on the show include the New York Giants - the most discussed in the NFL at 362.75 minutes - the Alabama Crimson Tide - the most talked about college football team at 208.75 minutes and the Kentucky Wildcats - the most covered college basketball team at 155.25 minutes.

Other key insights include the discovery that the NFL is the most popular sport (23.3 per cent of the show) - from the NBA (19.2 per cent), then MLB (16.8 per cent) and the two biggest college sports, football (7.7 per cent) and basketball (6.8 per cent).

The NHL ranks all the way down in seventh, with just a 2.7 per cent share.

The most mentioned player? You can probably guess - yes, it's the Miami Heat's LeBron James, mentioned a whopping 1930 times over the 12 months in which he won his first NBA championship.

Second place was another NBA star, the LA Lakers' Kobe Bryant.

The most talked about NFL player last year was Peyton Manning - he release by the Indianapolis Colts and signing by the Denver Broncos had something to do with that.
