Manchester United: Midfield transfer targets

Manchester United's midfield has been quite worrying in the past few seasons, as in some particular matches, it has been taken to the sword and completely crushed.

For a long time, United fans have been begging for a new midfielder. Ever since Roy Keane's retirement, there has been a void for a box-to-box midfielder who can play long-balls, not be afraid to make rough tackles when the team needs him and can score goals.

Had it not been for Michael Carrick, United's midfield could have been butchered last season. Carrick, who had always been overlooked of his contributions in the shadows, finally rose to prominence and showed his worth to the United fans.

Had it not been for him, United's midfield would have been bulldozed by other rival teams, such as Manchester City with the likes of Yaya Touré in their very expensive midfield.

This means that United need to purchase a strong midfielder that will make the midfield of the Red Devils more secure than it is already, and make sure that they can compete with teams like Bayern Munich, who currently have the best midfield amongst all the clubs, in my opinion at least.

So who could United sign?

1. Cesc Fabregas | FC Barcelona

United are desperately chasing the Barcelona midfield this summer, with chairman Ed Woodward leaving the club's pre-season tour to help this deal.

Fabregas would bring so much quality to United's midfield, with the Spain international weaving forward through-balls that United's strikers would easily bury.

Should he come to Old Trafford, the defence of other English clubs would tremble. It will be very hard to get him, though.

2. Marouane Fellaini | Everton

The Everton midfielder has long been linked with top Premier League clubs such as Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United.

Fellaini is a very strong and dominant midfielder, and he can destroy oppositions with his brute strength - United's first match of last season, in which Everton won 1-0 at Goodison Park, as case in point.

He has age on his side too, with the Belgian international being just 25 years of age.

The only down part, though, is that Fellaini does not have a lot of experience in top European competitions such as the Europa League and the Champions League.

3. Ilkay Gundogan | Borussia Dortmund

Gundogan is a top class defensive midfielder who has proven himself at Borussia Dortmund.

He would be more than welcome at United, as he would be a great addition to the side. He likes to pass, dribble and one of his other attributes is his finishing.

The German midfielder's finishing is very strong, and he can often be on the scoresheet for your side. He would be available for around £20 million, and he has played in the Champions League, so he has experience.

4. Yohan Cabaye | Newcastle United

Cabaye has been linked with Manchester United ever since the Red Devils missed out on Thiago.

Cabaye would be a great addition, with the Newcastle player having what it takes to play at the top level.

His pass success rate is around 80%, he has experience in the Premier League and on the top level of European football as he represented Newcastle in the Europa League and France in Euro 2012.

Cabaye likes to take long shots, and his passing is very good. He likes to play key passes, and along with Carrick in midfield, the strikers of Manchester United will get a lot of chances if Moyes pulls this one off.
