Peterborough United have confirmed the signing of Watford forward Britt Assombalonga in a club record deal.

The exact value of the transfer is not known, however chaiman Darragh MacAnthony revealed on Twitter that the club had 'smashed' their previous club-record transfer fee of £1.1million for Tyrone Barnett.

The DR Congo forward has put pen-to-paper on a four-year contract.

The contract is also believed to include a clause giving The Hornets first refusal on the 20-year-old should Peterborough choose to sell him in future.

The youngster impressed last season for League Two side Southend, scoring 16 goals in 49 games, including 12 in his first 20.

He had brief spells with Wealdstone and Braintree prior to that, scoring 11 in 16 and five in five respectively.

As Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson explained, Assombalonga was rated highly by the coaching staff at Watford, who were reluctant to let him leave, hence the inclusion of the first refusal option.

He told the Peterborough United website: "Everyone is aware we have been looking for a striker and this is the one that we have been after.

"Since Dwight (Gayle) left, we have been after him. We identified him, we have had him watched, he did very well at Southend and Watford thought very highly of him."

He added: "I had a good chat with Gianfranco (Zola, Watford manager) about him. We thought initially it was going to be a loan, but the chairman has come up with the money and that is fantastic for me.

"He has once again backed me. It was a position we needed to fill.

"He has a lot of potential the boy, he is strong physically, good pace, good finisher and a really nice lad.

"He ticks all of the boxes. He has improvement in him, but I don't think people will be too surprised, because it fits our criteria."

Assombalonga will wear the number nine shirt for The Posh, and is in line to feature in the opening fixture of the season against Swindon.
