As Reading continue their search for a new striker rumours have spread that Cardiff forward Etien Velikonja could be on his way to the Madejski on loan.

Velikonja joined Malky Mackay's side last July, but spent much of the season on the bench, starting just one league game.

A first-team place next season looks even less likely for the Slovenian with the signing of Andreas Cornelius from FC Copenhagen.

Reading are desperate for a striker, as rumours that Jason Roberts could become a player coach at Swindon spread.

He has long been linked with a Swindon move and it seems more likely now as the fitness levels needed in the Championship may be too much for the 35-year-old.

If he does leave a Velikonja deal seems even more plausible, Reading need a striker and Cardiff will want Velikonja to get more experience of English football, before he can become a regular at Cardiff City.

Velikonja has expressed he wants to stay at Cardiff, but told Sportal: "My status is likely to depend on arrivals, but I will not give up easily. I never have before and I never will."

There may not be any truth in these rumours, but it seems to make some sense.

For now though, Velikonja remains a Cardiff City player and played in a development squad that beat Barry Town FC 3-2 this week.

Roberts continues to work back to full fitness after struggling with injury last season, if the Royals fail to tie down another forward before the window shuts, they will need him to be fully fit again.
