Top 10: Overrated Premier League midfielders
A list of the Premier League's most overrated midfielders
The Premier League has plenty of incredibly talented players, but who is getting more praise or attention than they merit?
Here is a countdown of the Premier League's most overrated midfielders. Feel free to add your suggestions.
10. Samir Nasri
Although Samir Nasri is incredibly talented, his lack of consistency and discipline since joining Manchester City, has earned him a number 10 spot on my list. Nasri has only managed 11 goals in 83 appearances since joining City from Arsenal, and that's simply not good enough for a player on his calibre.
9. Jack Wilshere
There has been so much hype round Jack Wilshire for the past few years, that I feel like he has been touted to be much more than he truly is.
Although he has been unlucky with injuries, Wilshire cannot be considered as a world-class player just yet. He is truly an excellent player, but with all the media fuzz around him, comparing him to the worlds best players, he is truly highly overrated.
8. Stewart Downing
Stewart Downing has already been capped 34 times for England, and that's just ridiculous, in my opinion. Since joining Liverpool in 2011, Downing has been nothing more than an average player. Constantly criticised and losing his place in the team, Downing has never delivered on the £20m Liverpool paid for him.
7. Charlie Adam
Liverpool paid £7m for Adam in 2011 after having a great season for Blackpool the previous year. Adam never delivered on his price-tag, only scoring two goals in 35 games for Liverpool. Adam signed for Stoke City in 2012 where he played 27 games scoring three goals for the club, with his performances being poor overall.
6. Gareth Barry
Being an average player at best, Gareth Barry has managed 53 games for England as well as being a starter for Manchester City for the last few years.
After having a good spell at Aston Villa, Barry was signed by Manchester City for a fee of £12m in 2009. One of the Premier League's highest paid footballers, Barry has to be considered as highly overrated, with his severe lack of pace often getting his team into trouble.
5. Tom Cleverley
The hype around Tom Cleverley is something I have never fully understood. Sir Alex Ferguson identified Cleverley as a potential homegrown replacement for Paul Scholes, but in my opinion, that's absolutely absurd. Cleverley put in some decent performances for United last season but nothing in the area of being the next Scholes for United.
4. Joe Allen
When Liverpool bought Joe Allen, I was convinced that they had spent money on another average midfielder, much like Charlie Adam. He is a footballer very much adapted to the negative, possession-obsessed philosophy of Brendan Rodgers and does not seem to have many good attributes in his locker.
3. Jack Rodwell
Manchester City spent £12m on Rodwell, which would be considered as a fair amount for a young talented player.
Rodwell reminds me of Tom Huddlestone when he was at Derby. Simply an incomplete product who made the mistake of transferring too early. I feel as Rodwell will get lost at Manchester City and the main reason being he's simply not good enough to compete for a spot in the team.
2. John Obi Mikel
What can we say about John Obi Mikel? Well, the Nigerian is a decent footballer, but he's far, far from being good enough to play in the Chelsea midfield.
Mikel has not scored a single league goal for Chelsea and his only real attribute is passing the ball five yards sideways. Despite his minor contribution to the team, Mikel continues to play in Chelsea's congested midfield.
1. Jordan Henderson
Jordan Henderson had one good season for Sunderland, and suddenly he's worth £20m? Henderson's numerous performances in the Premier League have proven him to be mediocre at best.
His playing style being both clumsy and disorganised, I'm simply baffled that he's managed five caps for England already. We can just hope that Henderson will prove his worth next season, because this is one of the worst signings I have witnessed in the Premier League.
