Newcastle United forward Sammy Ameobi is hoping to remain in Alan Pardew’s first-team plans for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
21-year-old Ameobi, brother of fellow Toon player Shola, is one of only three strikers currently in the squad at St James’ Park but that surely won’t be the case for much longer as the club actively search for attacking reinforcements.
Lyon’s French international Bafetimbi Gomis is believed to be Pardew’s preferred target, but several reports in recent days have also linked Newcastle with moves for QPR frontman Loic Remy and Aston Villa’s Darren Bent.
Despite the potential competition for places, Ameobi, who has started twice for Newcastle in his fledgling career and also spent time on loan at Middlesbrough towards the end of last season, is hoping he won’t be forced to ply his trade elsewhere but concedes that it is certainly a possibility.
“I don’t want to go out on loan this year, I want to play here,” Ameobi told The Northern Echo.
“Going out will be a last resort if things don’t work out but this is where I want to be. I want to be a success in the Premier League, fingers crossed.
“This is a big season for me, it’s make or break. I will either be playing Premier League or further down the leagues. I want to be here at the top level, I’ve had a good start to pre-season and I want to keep that going.”
Newcastle begin the 2013/14 season with a daunting trip to Manchester City on August 19.
