The Washington Wizards underlined their intent to build their squad around point-guard John Wall, by confirming a contract extension that will tie the player to them for another five years.

Wall, well known for his strong athleticism and speed, has yet to make an All-Star team, but the Wizards are confident he is the figure upon which to build their future.

The 22-year-old's new deal will not begin until the 2014/15 season, but the fact that Washington offered him a contract with the maximum amount of time possible is a sure sign of their intentions.

The Wizards suffered a poor run of form whilst Wall was out injured last season, and were significantly improved upon his return, yet many are highlighting potential problems with the new deal.

Aside from the obvious issue that Wall might not blossom the way the Wizards are envisaging, there is also the worry that persistent injuries could hamper his development and consistency within the squad.

The clubs owner, Ted Leonsis, has delivered his backing on the agreement reached however, stating: ''He is the cornerstone of our team. We have clearly expressed our desire to build around him.''

Wall himself took the time during the Wizards' announcement of the deal to say he would do: "'Everything I can to get this team back where it belongs.''
