West Bromwich Albion are on the verge of agreeing a deal to sign Uruguay captain Diego Lugano from Paris Saint-Garmain, according to the Birmingham Mail.
The 32-year-old defender is set to become Steve Clarke’s second summer signing once he has completed the final stages of the negotiations.
Lugano was at the Hawthorns yesterday for a medical and an announcement on his arrival is expected by the end of the week.
The Midlands club could secure his signature for as little as £1m after the defender’s contract was due to expire next summer was told he is surplus to requirements at PSG.
He fell out of favour with the French champions after spending last season on-loan at Spanish outfit Malaga.
The Baggies have been looking for a centre-back that can provide competition for current first-choice pairing Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley.
Clarke’s men have been linked with Espanyol defender Hector Moreno and Napoli’s Federico Fernandez.
Lugano will bring valuable experience to the Baggies having played in the Champions League for PSG in 2012.
On the international stage, the Uruguay skipper has won 85 caps and captained the national side to 2011 Copa America victory.
