Losing one’s best player is always bad news for a team, especially since it is often very hard to find adequate replacements for departed star men.
Napoli however, will be very satisfied with their transfer dealings this summer despite losing their star man Edinson Cavani, on a mega-money move to PSG. Napoli fans would have been right to be concerned when PSG successfully lured the Uruguayan ace away from Naples.
After all, Cavani is unquestionably one of the finest strikers in football, and for Napoli, the concern was always going to be how to replace the one-of-a-kind striker, who managed to amass an impressive 104 goals in 138 appearances during his time in Naples.
It was always going to be an exceptionally daunting task, to find a marquee player to fill the big void left by Cavani, and while the temptation was always going to be to sign a big name striker and heap all the pressure on him, Napoli have decided to spread the burden of filling such big boots on several forwards.
After having secured the services of Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid, Napoli are now looking to snap up Jackson Martinez from Porto.
Higuan is a completely different player to Cavani. Unlike the Uruguayan who is a target forward, the Argentine is more versatile and can play anywhere up front.
At the tender age of 25, he brings with him a host of years of experience in the most elite competitions in Europe. In only 19 starts last season, he scored 16 goals and had a chance conversion rate of 0.333, which betters even Cavani’s rate of 0.216.
To compliment Higuain in filling the void left by Cavani, Benitez is looking to obtain Porto’s Jackson Martinez, who was the top scorer in the Portuguese league last season with 26 goals.
With the additions of Jose Callejon as a right winger from Real Madrid and Dries Mertens on the left wing from PSV, Higuain and potentially Martinez would be sure to have a lot of support behind them as Napoli get ready to mount a title challenge on current holders Juventus.
Napoli may have lost their star striker, but adequate steps have been taken by the Naples club, to ensure that the club legend won’t be missed; at least not missed too much.
