The future of Manchester City midfield target Adem Ljajic shows no sign of being resolved any time soon, as contract negotiations drag on.

The Fiorentina star has been issued an ultimatum by La Viola, after sporting director Daniele Prade admitted to being frustrated with the lack of developments.

"We are trying to extend the Ljajic's contract but it depends on the player and his will," Prade told Sky Sports.

"There will be an important meeting between his agent and our president, but our club wants only motivated people who are willing to stay at Fiorentina.

"We have to evaluate this situation day by day."

The news will come as a timely boost to Manchester City and AC Milan, who have both been linked with moves for the 21-year-old playmaker, and are monitoring the progress of these crunch talks closely.

Should City firm up their interest in Ljajic with a formal bid, the Serbian international could finally seal a move to the Premier League, having come close to joining City's fiercest rivals, Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson had arranged a £15 million double swoop for Ljajic and fellow Serb Zoran Tosic in January 2009, allowing both players to remain with parent club Partizan Belgrade for the remainder of the year.

However, Ferguson had a change of heart and pulled the plug on the deal 12 months later.

How City fans would react to signing someone deemed not good enough for United remains to be seen, but new boss Manuel Pellgrini seems convinced that Ljajic is good enough to make the grade in the Premier League.
