Barcelona‘s new mangers Tata Martino has already been given a list of tasks to do as the man charged with taking the Catalans forward.
Let's take a look at the five biggest tasks that may be waiting to face Martino as he starts his begins life at Barca.
Handling the pressure
Being a manager of a world-class team like Barcelona is never going to be easy. The pressure to beat Real Madrid is an unavoidable task for any man in the dugout at the Nou Camp.
Barcelona din’t have a very good last season by their standards, with the exception of their La Liga triumph. They lost three straight El Classico derbies and were humbled in the UEFA Champions League semi-final.
Tata Martino will be expected to turn all that around and bring Barcelona bring back the success they enjoyed before the post-Guardiola era.
Sign a central defender
The Catalans look pretty strong in all sectors of the field except in central defence. They struggled to get a partner for Gerard Pique the whole of last season and the current options include the likes of Carles Puyol and Alex Song.
They struggled against quality teams who just pierced through the central defence. The midfield looked to be defensive to solve the issue between the season, but that in turn created a big mess in the midfield department seeing Xavi and other central midfielders being at times overworked and unable to contribute effectively going forward.
The board will certainly be expecting Martino to solve the issue out, with the biggest rumours linking the club Thiago Silva for now.
Developing young talent
Probably a sector that even Tito Vilanova struggled with is the production of young talent. They have recently lost a talented in the young star Thiago Alcantra who wasn’t able to play regularly in the first team.
Other young stars like Marc Bartara and Marin Montaya are still struggling to make a mark.
After all, if Martino wants to settle in Barcelona for the long-term, he will have to think about the future stars as well. The team is too occupied by senior stars like Dani Alves , Xavi and Andres Iniesta and the right step to move forward would be find some replacements for them for the future.
Sort the Valdes situation
Victor Valdes has been keeping the newspapers busy by giving mixed statements about his future at the club. Martino will have to get that issue settled and get a definite reply from Victor Valdes.
Valdes was very close on signing with AS Monaco and has regularly been in the reckoning for a move to Italy. If Valdes is moving out of Catalonia, Martina will have to look at some other options as substitute keeper Pinto doesn’t look match-ready.
Give Messi the support he needs
The attack has always revolved around the Argentinean master Lionel Messi. Barcelona have not been very successful in developing a great forward who can give Messi the support, and that has been a major reason for Barcelona’s downfall in the few matches they have come unstuck.
During the matches that Messi was injured this season due to hamstring injury, Barcelona’s attack looked very vague and din’t look threatening. Another world class striker would give great support to their strong midfield which has been performing well for several years.
The exit of David Villa means that Barcelona has to search or develop a another striker who can support Messi very well.
