Liverpool have submitted a formal offer for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa, according to reports.
TalkSPORT cite speculation in Spain when claiming that the Reds have moved ahead of Arsenal in the race for the two-cap Brazil international, who faces strong competition in the capital after the arrival of David Villa and Leo Baptistao at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.
Costa has a £21.8million minimum fee release clause in his contract, the radio station claims, and it’s unclear if Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will either meet the valuation or look to negotiate a lower price.
The Reds are fighting hard to keep Luis Suarez at Anfield this summer, with the Uruguayan heavily linked with a move away from Merseyside.
However, the report claims Rodgers is confident of keeping the player, and has already added Iago Aspas to the Liverpool ranks.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are monitoring the 24-year-old, the report claims, as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his attack this summer.
The Gunners have already added Yaya Sanogo, but failed to secure a big-name addition at the Emirates Stadium.
Costa would provide Arsenal with an additional attacking option next season, but the north London outfit now appear to be playing catch-up in their pursuit of the player.
