Manchester United could be on the verge of the most sensational transfer of the summer, with reports claiming the Premier League champions are in advanced talks with Real Madrid over the purchase of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese star, who left the Red Devils after a successful six-year spell in 2009, could return to Old Trafford before the end of the transfer window in a deal worth £80m, according to the Daily Star.
The newspaper reports that United have grown increasingly confident of re-signing the prolific forward due to Real Madrid's pursuit of Tottenham star Gareth Bale, who is expected to join the Spanish giants for a world-record fee this summer.
Ronaldo has scored a remarkable 201 goals in 199 matches since joining Real Madrid for a world-record £80m fee in June 2009, but Los Blancos are prepared to allow the Portugal international to leave the club after he revealed his desire to return to England - and indicated that he would not extend his contract at the Bernabeu.
Their increasing confidence of signing Bale as a like-for-like replacement for Ronaldo has also affected their decision to open talks with the Red Devils.
Ronaldo's return would significantly boost United's chances of retaining the Premier League title this season.
With Chelsea and Manchester City both strengthening this summer, David Moyes' side looked in danger of falling behind. However, the return of Ronaldo would surely make them title favourites once more.
