The Toronto Blue Jays’ left fielder Melky Cabrera has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, having picked up a knee injury in their game against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday.

The 28-year-old incurred the injury when he was attempting to throw the ball back to the cutoff man after picking up Erick Aybar’s single, but he lost control of the ball, allowing Mark Trumbo to complete the Angels’ sixth run on the way to an 8-2 victory.

The former New York Yankees’ player had to leave the game at the end of the fourth inning, and Neil Wagner has been recalled in his place.

Cabrera, who joined the Blue Jays from the San Francisco Giants in a deal worth $16million over two years, was only activated off the DL list last month, and Wagner was optioned to the Buffalo Bisons in the minor league.

Wagner’s last game for the Blue Jays was on July 19, before Cabrera returned from a prior knee injury, but he will now pitch for them again for the time being.
