On Saturday, Premier League outfit Tottenham revealed that the United States captain, Clint Dempsey, was returning to Major League Soccer after just one season with Spurs.

Seattle Sounders have confirmed the deal, with majority owner Joe Roth telling his club's official website: "This is a historic day for Sounders FC and our fans.

"Clint is a world-class soccer player who can take this club to a higher level."

The 30-year-old joined Spurs from Fulham for £6 million just 12 months ago on what was a dramatic transfer deadline day.

Having been close to making a switch to Anfield to join Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool, Tottenham nipped in to sign the USA captain from under their noses, with Dempsey ending up at White Hart Lane.

The ex-Fulham star scored 12 goals in 43 appearances for Tottenham last season, but Andre Villas-Boas seems happy to let him move on.

The last time Dempsey played in the States was back in 2006 when he was with New England Revolution, and he has now decided to return to his homeland with Seattle.

The Sounders went into the weekend's games sitting in seventh place of the Western Conference of the MLS.

They also boast a number of former Premier League players in their ranks, including ex-Fulham players Marcus Hahnemann and Eddie Johnson.
